About us

The Oyster Catchers

Pied Oystercatcher (Haematopus longirostris) is a species of Oystercatcher. It is a wadding bird native to Australia and commonly found on the coastline. Even though their name is "oystercatcher", they seldom eat oysters. Pied oystercatchers feed mainly on bivalve molluscs, but also take other invertbrates . The techniques they use to break open the shells of moluscs vary greatly and are thought to be learned behaviour.
